AZEO-SEP pervaporation modules breaking an ethanol/water azeotrope at a hybrid plant.

Solution · Azeotrope Separations

Azeotrope & Difficult Separations

Some separations simply defeat distillation: azeotropes, close-boiling mixtures, and heat-sensitive products where a reboiler is the wrong tool. Petro Sep's AZEO-SEP® pervaporation platform separates by selective membrane transport instead of relative volatility, breaking the ethanol/water and IPA/water azeotropes and reaching purities distillation cannot, with no entrainer to add and later remove. It slots into a hybrid train with existing columns to lift both purity and capacity.

What you get

Outcomes on this vertical.

Product purity
99.5 wt%
Past the azeotrope on ethanol, IPA, and other close-boiling mixtures.
No entrainer
Cleaner process
Selective membrane transport removes the need to add and later strip an entrainer.
Debottlenecking
More capacity
A membrane stage on an existing column lifts throughput without a second column.

Past the point distillation stalls

An azeotrope is the ceiling distillation cannot pass, and the usual workarounds, azeotropic or extractive distillation and molecular sieves, add energy, entrainers, and complexity. Pervaporation uses a dense membrane that lets one species permeate while holding the other back, so composition moves past the azeotrope by selective transport rather than by boiling. Placed on the tail of a distillation train, AZEO-SEP carries the final purity while the column does the efficient bulk work, a hybrid that lifts purity and capacity at once.

Frequently asked

Common questions.

What azeotropes can you break?
Ethanol/water and IPA/water are the most common, and the same approach applies to other close-boiling and azeotropic mixtures. We confirm the separation on your feed before scaling.
Do we replace our distillation column?
No. AZEO-SEP works with it. The column does the bulk separation up to the azeotrope; the membrane stage takes over for the final purity distillation cannot reach.
